blue uses FORscene
blue post production, a top UK post house, has provided FORscene to its client Dragonfly productions for the BBC production Kill It, Cook It, Eat It, airing every day from 5-9 January. This series looks at the process of getting wild game from the field to the fork. Loggers used FORscene remotely, with executive producers and directors making rough cut edits in FORscene for finishing on Avid. Drafts from Avid were then reviewed wide-area in FORscene. Sara Hill, post production director at blue said: "We're very happy with the high level of personal service and responsivenes from Forbidden. FORscene has increased efficiency of our edit suites, giving excellent value for money".

Infrastructure release
Forbidden's new serving infrastructure has been released to those servers used by shareholders, consumers, and for pilot projects. The release on to our broadcast and professional client servers is expected next month.

Mac upgrade
Release 1.7.6 of FORscene Load Mac has just been released. The main improvment over 1.6.12 is that you can now capture DV video files on the Mac through the firewire port without the need for any other Mac software - and then upload it through FORscene Load Mac's sophisticated queuing system.

New server infrastructure
A new FORscene distributed server design has entered testing after nine months of development. Servers plugged in anywhere in the world are organically incorporated into the global system as it continues to run; if any server is unplugged, the remaining servers compensate by automatically redistributing their data and serving capacity.

Windows upgrade
FORscene Load PC v5.9 is available. It has the more efficient upload pioneered on the FORscene Linux boxes, and is the first version to work with Vista.

Staff addition

Mac upgrade
FORscene users can upload video in a variety of ways: the high performance dedicated Linux box; the Windows and MacOS X software; and with web upload. FORscene Load Mac version 1.6.12, which compresses DV content around 20 times, uploads up to twice as fast as previous Mac versions - almost matching the FORscene Load Linux upload speeds.

New servers
Forbidden is upgrading its FORscene infrastructure again, this time with the addition of two new servers to the internet backbone at Maidenhead. These add around 8,000 hours of video capacity for broadcast and professional FORscene customers.

Incremental search
One of FORscene's more popular uses in broadcast post-production is for frame accurate video logging. FORscene's ability to search for videos which match particular metadata has now been supplemented by a new real time incremental search in the logging window - matching clips within a video are displayed in real time as search terms are typed in.

Capacity upgrade
A recent server upgrade doubled the number of active broadcast customers FORscene can support. Now, a client side upgrade is being rolled out to FORscene Load Linux boxes around the world, doubling again the number of active users FORscene can support.

North One / Channel 4
North One Television, one of the top UK Indies, has adopted FORscene for its NHS series for Channel 4. FORscene Load digitises their rushes to FORscene and Avid at the same time. FORscene is used for remote logging, and allows producers and directors to make shot selections, which are exported as AAFs for auto-conform on Avid, saving time and money. Mark Bunkle, Production Manager said: "FORscene has been used by North One Television on several productions ... All in all it has been a great success".

Volume control
Today's FORscene upgrade adds independent volume control to each play window. This allows FORscene's review, logging and editing customers to adjust playback volume over a large dynamic range, including to well over 100%, allowing even the quietest sounds to be heard.

Efficiency
FORscene's servers on the internet backbone handle video post-production for many broadcast productions. Server disks double in capacity every year - and today's upgrade balances this by doubling the number of concurrent video streams which can be ingested into the system from around the world.

Television appearance
Forbidden's CEO, Stephen Streater, made a guest appearance on today's Trading Places internet TV channel. This is watched by an audience of around 60,000 subscribers to sharecrazy.com.

New servers
Forbidden has expanded the geographical spread of its FORscene servers by adding another site on the internet backbone. The new servers have the capacity to support editing of the output of up to 100 24/7 TV stations.

Titles
FORscene has long been able to import titles from graphics packages. It now has additional built in capabilities: by right clicking on a title, editors can set foreground / background colours and transparency, fades in and out, justification and layout - as this mobile shot video illustrates.

North One / Discovery
North One Television, one of the top UK Indies, has adopted FORscene for its production of Industrial Junkies, series 1, being made for Discovery EMEA. Loggers use FORscene remotely, allowing producers and directors to make shot selections and rough cuts easily. Edits are then exported from FORscene to Avid for finishing. Debbie Austin, Production Manager said: "FORscene was used by North One Television on a previous Discovery series ... it saves so much time and money." Michal Porecki, Series Producer said: "Now it's in use, we love it. The benefits are obvious".
